The specifications are based on 10 minimum requirements which companies have to comply with in order to obtain certification by an independent third party and authorisation by the Sicily SOStain Foundation to use the SOStain label.

VINEYARD MANAGEMENT
In the production of grapes, wineries are required to comply with
at least one of the following regulations:
– National Integrated Production Quality System (SQNPI);
– Regional Regulation of Integrated Production;
– Management methods of eco-sustainable companies (PSR Sicilia 10.1.b);
– Organic Production Regulations.

100% of any grapes and wines purchased must be of regional origin.

INDICATORS
Companies are required to calculate, at the company level, the indices of the VIVA programme (AIR, WATER, VINEYARD) and to respect the TERRITORY indicator.

ENERGY EFFICIENT
TECHNOLOGIES
As regards winemaking, only production processes with an energy consumption of less than 0.7 kWh/litre of wine are considered efficient.

WEIGHT OF THE BOTTLES
The average weight of the still wine bottles used during the year must be less than or equal to 550 g/0.75 litres.

TRASPARENCY IN
COMMUNICATION
The companies adhering to the programme are required to prepare a Sustainability Report before March 31 of each year.

LIMITING THE CONTENT OF
RESIDUES IN WINES
Laboratory analyses must be carried out annually on a sample of at least 25% of the products marketed to verify the absence of residues of agricultural chemicals in the wine.
